LEMONT, Ill. — Two days after his Presidents Cup snub, Rory Sabbatini of South Africa made captain Greg Norman's decision to leave him off the International team look more peculiar.

Sabbatini ran off seven birdies on renovated Cog Hill for a 5-under-par 66 Thursday, giving him a share of the lead with American Steve Marino at the BMW Championship and hope of making it to the FedEx Cup finale.

They had a one-stroke lead over American Bo Van Pelt and Australian Marc Leishman. Leishman qualified for the third of four PGA Tour Playoff events by making an eagle on his final hole Monday at the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston.

American Tiger Woods, the top-ranked player in the world and a four-time winner at Cog Hill, was among those at 68.

Ryan Moore of Puyallup was tied for 29th place at 71. The top 30 players in FedEx Cup points advance to next week's The Tour Championship in Atlanta. Moore started the BMW Championship at 48th in the points.

Sabbatini won the Byron Nelson Championship in May and appeared to be in good shape to make the team for next month's Presidents Cup until Y.E. Yang of South Korea stunned the golf world with his comeback victory over Woods at the PGA Championship to bump Sabbatini out of the International team's top 10.

Norman used his captain's picks on 17-year-old Ryo Ishikawa of Japan, who has won four times in the last calendar year, and Australian Adam Scott, who is in the worst slump of his career and has dropped to No. 53 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

After his low round, Sabbatini took the high road.

"If I'd been playing well over the past couple weeks and didn't get picked, I might have something to complain about," said Sabbatini, who has missed four cuts in his last eight starts.

What disturbed Sabbatini was not hearing from Norman or anyone else during the three weeks after the PGA Championship, when the captain makes his two selections.

"There was not a single conversation or a single phone call, period," Sabbatini said. "You could say I was a little disappointed."

Date: September 11th
Time: 23:30 (GMT)

Update: Thursday, Sept. 3, 8:56 a.m.
Seattle won its first piece of hardware: the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Sounders, Major League Soccer’s newest club, defeated one of the league’s most storied teams, D.C. United, 2-1, on Wednesday. Freddy Montero and Roger Levesque scored for the expansion Sounders to give them the victory.

One of the oldest sporting competitions in the United States also remains one of the most obscure.

Welcome to Wednesday night’s final of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Robert F. Kennedy Stadium in Washington, where D.C. United will face the Seattle Sounders in an all-Major League Soccer final.

The game will be the 96th national championship, dating to 1914 when the Brooklyn Field Club defeated Brooklyn Celtic, 2-1, to win what was then known as the National Challenge Cup’s Dewar Trophy (yes, that Dewar). The trophy had been presented by Sir Thomas R. Dewar to American soccer officials in England ahead of the 1912 London Olympics in the belief that a competition modeled after the English F.A. Cup (and other tournaments around the world) would help to promote the game in the United States. If only. More...

CFL: Watch Hamilton vs Toronto - Canadian Football League Match Live Stream on September 11th

Hamilton

The turnover battle
Ticat head coach Marcel Bellefeuille mentions this old chestnut every week when asked about the keys to the game, but consider this stat: the Tiger-Cats have lost the turnover battle and won the game just once this season. Same for the Argos. The Double Blue's five turnovers last week were certainly a major factor in Hamilton's 34-15 Labour Day win, as they gave the Ticats terrific field position several times.

Argonaut injuries
Three Toronto starters are doubtful for tonight's game: receiver Reggie McNeal (knee), defensive tackle Adriano Belli (rib) and corner Byron Parker (shoulder). The loss of Belli would have the biggest impact as his replacement, rookie Etienne Legare, doesn't have the inside presence of the Kissing Bandit, a two-team East Division all-star. If Belli's out, Hamilton's veteran offensive line may be able to take advantage of Legare to create some holes for running back DeAndra' Cobb.

The big mo
At 2-7, the Argos appear to be a mentally fragile team: when things start to go wrong, they have a tendency to snowball quickly. Hamilton fans will remember that feeling well. The Cats, on the other hand, appear to be gaining confidence with each successive week. A win by the Cats tonight would essentially stick a fork in the Argos' playoff chances but Hamilton needs to have the killer instinct to make it happen. Do they have it yet?

BY THE NUMBERS
23 Percentage of Hamilton takeaways garnered by linebacker Markeith Knowlton, who has three interceptions and three fumble recoveries on the season.

8.0, 6.5 Average yards per pass by Ticat quarterbacks Kevin Glenn and Quinton Porter, respectively. Glenn now has 1,126 passing yards on the season, Porter 1,179.

797 Receiving yards by Ticat and former Argo Arland Bruce III, tops in the Canadian Football League. Bruce has 78, 98, 119 and 115 yards receiving in his past four games.

KEY MATCHUP
Hamilton defensive co-ordinator Greg Marshall vs. Toronto head coach and offensive co-ordinator Bart Andrus

The Argo attack has been downright anemic, ranking last in the league in both points scored and average yards per game. With no CFL experience, Andrus appears to be struggling with some of the nuances of the Canadian game. Meanwhile, Marshall's Ticat defence, after a slow start, has been moving up the defensive ranking. With just a single day to game plan, Marshall's 15 years in the league may give him an advantage in making adjustments in the rematch.

QUOTES
"It's always an amazing thing to me that everybody thinks they can do my job better than I do. I don't think I can sell insurance better than the insurance guy down the street. I don't think I can run a Tim Hortons. But it's just always something with sports that everybody has their opinion and that's what makes it so great."

Baseball: Watch Baltimore Orioles vs New York Yankees - Major League Baseball Match Live Stream on September 11th

New York Yankees
Date: September 11th
Time: 23:00 (GMT)

Derek Jeter can cement his New York Yankees legacy even further this evening when the Bronx Bombers open a three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium.

Jeter enters the contest tied atop the all-time Yankee hits list with the legendary Lou Gehrig with 2,721 after going 3-for-3 in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

"I was a Yankees fan growing up. Coming up through the organization I know a lot about the history," Jeter said. "[Gehrig is] probably one of the classiest people to ever play the game. To be alongside him, at least for a day, is quite an accomplishment."

Jeter should have no problem passing the Iron Horse this weekend, as his 267 hits against Baltimore are his most versus any opponent.

"He's tied now, so there's only one hit to worry about, and hopefully he'll get that Friday in his first at-bat and put it all behind him," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said, alluding to Jeter's discomfort discussing personal achievements.

In Wednesday's win over Tampa Bay, Jorge Posada slugged a pinch-hit, three-run homer during a four-run eighth inning for the AL East-leading Yankees, who swept the four-game set with the Rays and won for the 12th time in their last 14 tries overall.

New York now leads the division by nine games over the Boston Red Sox.

Hoping to keep them rolling tonight will be left-hander Andy Pettitte, who has won his last four starts and five decisions. Pettitte's latest win came on Saturday in Toronto, as he allowed four runs and four hits in six innings to run his record to 13-6 to go along with a 4.10 earned run average.

Pettitte, who hasn't lost since getting beat by Oakland back on July 25, beat the O's the last time he faced them and is an impressive 26-6 lifetime against them with a 3.56 ERA in 39 games, 37 of which have been starts.

The Orioles will counter with rookie Chris Tillman, who is 1-3 with a 4.66 ERA. Tillman, though, lost his third straight decision last Friday against Texas, which battered him for five runs and seven hits in six innings.

Tillman has never faced the Yankees.

Baltimore created some history of its own on Wednesday, as second baseman Brian Roberts doubled in the fifth inning to become the fourth player in history to have three seasons with at least 50. Hall of Famers Tris Speaker, Paul Waner and Stan Musial are the others.

The Orioles, though, lost the game to Boston and has dropped six of their last eight games.

New York has had its way with the Orioles this season, winning 12 of the 15 meetings, including all six matchups contested in the Bronx, where the Yankees have won 10 straight against Baltimore.
